The Project involving the Campaspe Shire in partnership with the Victorian Government will develop a key pedestrian/cycle link across the Campaspe River.
This strategic link will connect communities from Echuca South, Central, East and West to existing local roads, pedestrian paths, sidewalks, bike lanes, greenways, recreation facilities and key community hubs including schools, tourist paths and the business districts.
The bridge across the Campaspe River and the connecting paths will greatly increase the potential for and attractiveness of local walking and cycling instead of short car trips. This will include encouraging tourists to cycle or walk rather than drive.
The Shire of Campaspe was successful in acquiring phase two funding through the Department of Transport’s Travel Smart and Local Area Access Grants Programs.
This project aims to build on the success of the previously funded Travel Smart project and will use a multi-faceted approach to positively influence the development of long term sustainable transport opportunities for the Echuca Community. We will continue to work with our partner schools and a number of new schools to measure and promote changes to transport patterns and transport behaviour. Simultaneously, we will initiate some additional interventions and develop improved infrastructure to reduce the barriers to active transport.
Objective 1: Increase the numbers of students using sustainable transport to and from school by the end of 2010
Objective 2: Reduce traffic congestion around school by 10% by the end of 2010
Objective 3: Continued review and intervention at Phase 1 schools
