Building bridges to connect Echuca Communities

The Project involving the Campaspe Shire in partnership with the Victorian Government will develop a key pedestrian/cycle link across the Campaspe River.

This strategic link will connect communities from Echuca South, Central, East and West to existing local roads, pedestrian paths, sidewalks, bike lanes, greenways, recreation facilities and key community hubs including schools, tourist paths and the business districts.

The bridge across the Campaspe River and the connecting paths will greatly increase the potential for and attractiveness of local walking and cycling instead of short car trips. This will include encouraging tourists to cycle or walk rather than drive.

Travel Smart- Transforming Campaspe Phase 2

Campaspe Kids on bikes

The Shire of Campaspe was successful in acquiring phase two funding through the Department of Transport’s Travel Smart and Local Area Access Grants Programs.

This project aims to build on the success of the previously funded Travel Smart project and will use a multi-faceted approach to positively influence the development of long term sustainable transport opportunities for the Echuca Community. We will continue to work with our partner schools and a number of new schools to measure and promote changes to transport patterns and transport behaviour.  Simultaneously, we will initiate some additional interventions and develop improved infrastructure to reduce the barriers to active transport.

Objective 1: Increase the numbers of students using sustainable transport to and from school by the end of 2010

Objective 2: Reduce traffic congestion around school by 10% by the end of 2010

Objective 3: Continued review and intervention at Phase 1 schools

Walking Strategy

In 2007 the Shire of Campaspe developed a Walking and Cycling Strategy

The Campaspe Walking and Cycling Strategy aims to:

  • Provide integrated cycling and walking routes that encourage people to walk and cycle to work, recreational areas, shops and schools
  • Increase the number of people walking and cycling by promoting new and existing paths and by promoting the benefits of walking and cycling
  • Promote walking and cycling as a viable tourist activity
  • To provide safe and convenient paths for cyclists and pedestrians, supported by quality infrastructure and design principles
  • Ensure that Council is compliant with all relevant requirements and legislation relating to outcomes of this strategy and to address issues around safety and risk management
  • Implement, review and evaluate the Cycling and Walking strategy to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of the community

Copies of the Walking Cycling strategy are available on the Shire of Campaspe’s Website
