Greater Shepparton on the Moove

Greater Shepparton on the Moove is an initiative of Greater Shepparton City Council and many local health promotion organisations. This project forms part of Council’s Municipal Public Health Plan.  The main aim of the program is for Greater Shepparton to be renowned as the Mooving City, encouraging residents and visitors to get active by means of walking.  For further information on Greater Shepparton on the Moove including initiatives listed below visit our website at www.onthemoove.com.au.

 

Pedometer Challenge

The Greater Shepparton on the Moove Pedometer Challenge is held annually in Walktober. Step up and take the challenge, it’s totally free! Individual and team entries of all ages and abilities welcome. Grab a team together of 4 – 6 people you work with, family, friends, housemates or sporting buddies. Individual and team entrants can compete in the Athlete Competition.

Set your own personal goal and/or team goal – each individual should aim for 10,000 steps each day. Greater Shepparton has many established accessible walking paths providing an ideal way to increase your steps.

Workplaces are encouraged to enter multiple teams to compete against other workplaces and community groups. The challenge is a great team building activity!

Both individual and team entrants can view their progress from the leader board and be in the running to win some great prizes. A weekly newsletter will be provided to all participants including health and wellbeing tips, team and individual profiles and upcoming physical activity programs and events.

Twilight Stroll

The Greater Shepparton on the Move Twilight Stroll is a FREE community event that encourages families to participate in physical activity and enjoy a night out with their community. Held twice yearly, participants take a 2km stroll through native bushland along the Shared Path Network to SPC Ardmona KidsTown.
Upon arrival to SPC Ardmona KidsTown participants are provided with the following:

  • A healthy options BBQ tea
  • Fresh Fruit provided by local orchards
  • Musical entertainment by local artists
  • Children’s entertainment including jumping castles, miniature train rides, games and activities and 5ha of play equipment and space provided at SPC Ardmona KidsTown
  • Health Checks and Community Displays
  • Family Games Area including sack races, three legged races and egg and spoon races
  • Shuttle bus returns families from SPC Ardmona KidsTown to stroll registration locations.

The Summer Stroll Series are held in six small towns within Greater Shepparton including Dookie, Murchison, Merrigum, Tatura, Undera and Katandra West. The series involves a short walk around the township and conclude at either the local recreation reserve or swimming pool.

Upon arrival to the stroll destination participants will be provided with a free healthy options BBQ, family games and activities including jumping castles, musical entertainment and health checks.

The Twilight Stroll and Summer Stroll Series are volunteer run events. All aspects of the Twilight Stroll and Summer Stroll series are provided at no cost to participants.

 

Walking Paths

The Group have audited several walking paths throughout the municipality and provided detailed maps of the tracks.  The maps outline distances of the walks, locations of seats, attractions, drinking fountains and rubbish bins. Walking Paths that have been audited include the Victoria Lake Precinct and Kialla Lakes.  Copies can be found on the Greater Shepparton on the Moove website.

 

Walking Groups

Council has coordinated a directory of walking groups in the municipality including details such as departure location, time, cost, intensity, average age groups and contact details.

PUFF Walking Program

Older adults living in Greater Shepparton are encouraged to participate in PUFF, a guided group walking program run from Aquamoves. It’s a great way to meet new people and stay active.

Walkers meet at Aquamoves three mornings a week (Monday to Wednesday) and then set off for a 30 minute walk around Victoria Park Lake led by an Aquamoves Fitness Instructor.  Walkers return to Aquamoves to share morning tea and a chat.  There are some essential conditions that must be met before joining the program.
