Mildura Rural City Council promotes and supports clean, attractive and sustainable public open spaces, community safety and walking to enhance community health and well-being through project officers and community development teams.
Partnership work is undertaken with community agencies to boost infrastructure to support safe community walks and school crossings and provide community access to walking trails and historical places of interest through the municipality.
Mildura Rural City Council is proactive in establishing walking trails and renewing and repairing footpaths to create sustainable and accessible infrastructure which supports walk- friendly environments.
Council’s Early Years, through the Walking School Bus project has organised a calendar of informal walking buses to schools to link in with key physical activity promotions such as Walk Safely to School and Walktober. In addition other community events with a focus on increasing physical activity are supported such as the Tour de Murray and community events.
Mildura Rural City Council actively supports and engages schools and community agencies such as Sunraysia Community Health in Heart Foundation walks and community house walking groups. Walking and riding as groups has been taken up with children and schools throughout the municipality. Council is also proactive in supporting and working with traffic management, Victoria Police and community safety groups to make walking routes available and user friendly for all in the community. During school holidays Council support a community house group on community walks. Council’s Mayor is also a regular participant in boosting community walking and school walks through the community.
