To the Island: Community walk: Saturday, 20 Feb 2010 with photos

Thanks to all who came along on Saturday for the trial run of our community walk, especially as it was broiling! Some stayed in the cool of Como House cafe, and some headed off to Herring Island.

The island is well worth visiting. It's calm and peaceful, and the sculptures are eloquent.  Highlights include two works by the Scottish sculptor, Andy Goldsworthy -- "Cairn" and "Stone House" -- and the work of Jill Peck, a magnificent "boat" of Harcourt granite, its prow heading down the river.

Below are some of the sights on the island.

- Entrance to Herring Island - Stone house - Falling fence
- Cairn - Steerage - View of Yarra River

About our group

My name is Narelle Hanratty and I'm the convenor of "A Walk in the Park." Our group is interested in:

1. Replacing some car trips:  encouraging residents of Toorak who live within a kilometre of Toorak Village to choose to walk to the Village on some days, rather than drive

2. Walking to, or from work: encouraging residents of Toorak and South Yarra to consider walking to, or from their job in the city, say, a couple of times a week (walking beside the Yarra at night is one of life's great pleasures, as is passing the stalled traffic)

3. Increasing pedestrian safety: increasing the safety of pedestrians through the installation of more crossings in the Toorak area, and in particular, the installation of a pedestrian-operated signal near the intersection of Bruce Street and Williams Road

4. Joys and benefits: anything else related to the joys and benefits of walking.
