Access Round Kilmore

ARK (Access Round Kilmore) is for local residents who are actively campaigning for better transport and public spaces in Kilmore.

Kilmore has a number of transport issues, namely affecting pedestrians and drivers. There are very few footpaths leading from the large suburban developments into the town centre. Some footpaths even stop abruptly leaving pedestrians to walk on the road. ARK is a group who seek to have all public spaces in Kilmore lead into the town centre with footpaths or adequate space on the road.

The roads in Kilmore are of contrasting variety – some uncurbed, some curbed, some with adjoining footpaths and some without. Some roads are gravel yet most roads in the town are asphalted with gravel shoulders. At the best of times they are easy to drive upon, yet lately the roads in Kilmore are in terrible condition.

The public spaces in Kilmore are gradually getting better. Residents need to maintain constant support to create attractive, interesting and exciting places for us to enjoy. This includes making playgrounds with more suitable equipment, which are integrated with the current arrangement and accessible for all age levels. Playgrounds should have adequate shading and seating. They should also be kept clean and mown. Most importantly, these public spaces should be attractive with trees, shrubs and flowers.

ARK seeks to lobby the local council, state upper and lower house members of Parliament, to fund or apply for funding for the above. Imagine a town where we can let our children go safely to the park, or into school independently. A town that has great public parks in all the suburban developments – Mannagum, The Elms, Willowmavin, Nature’s Run, Kilmore East and College Views Estate. These estates should all have footpaths that lead from the entrance gate into town.

Through ARK’s link page you can access all the stakeholders who can help residents of Kilmore get what they want. Sometimes, it only takes a letter or two to make a change.

ARK also supports the funding for bus transport to the Kilmore East train station on weekends and a solution to the parking problem at St Patrick’s Primary School and Kilmore Primary School.

Over the past few months, ARK has been winding down due to personal commitments.  The page here serves as a means for Kilmore residents to keep up to date about local issues involving footpaths.  ARK is gradually handing over responsibility for active lobbying to a small number of specific groups in Kilmore - namely Kilmore Integrity Kept, Kilmore East Progress Association, Kilmore East Recreation Reserve, St Patricks Primary School Parents and Friends.

There has been some substantial developments in Kilmore regarding footpaths.  The Community Walking Plan is about to be developed by the shire.  There is also a groundswell of activity for Sutherland Street/Conway Street and the Kilmore East footpath.  Please see these pages for further information.
