Victoria Walks Incorporated (A0052693U) is a walking-for-transport health promotion charity managed by a independent voluntary board.
Our mission is to promote the health of all Victorians by increasing the number of people who walk, particulalry for everyday purposes.
Our vision is for vibrant, supportive and strong neighbourhoods and communities where people can and do choose to walk wherever possible.
There are many reasons why people walk – to relax, for exercise, to get somewhere, because the dog needs it, because it’s cheap (free!) or just to get out of the house. For all the good reasons, though, there are plenty of reasons why people don’t walk.
Perhaps inadequate footpaths or other obstacles make walking hard, there’s too much traffic, or people are worried about their safety or the safety of their kids. Or maybe walking just doesn’t occur to them, because nobody else is doing it and the car is too convenient.
Your motivation for wanting to encourage walking might come from anywhere: you might want to get more active, or are concerned about safety. You might care about the health of the planet, or simply want to make some local friends.
Whatever your motivation, though, this site can help. It has been designed to help local people like you to actively encourage walking. It has lots of information to help you join in the action, and create a neighbourhood that is safe, friendly and pleasant for walking around.
That sounds like a big task – which is why Victoria Walks includes tips on everything from how to find (or start!) a local walking group, to checklists to help you work out how to make your neighbourhood better to walk around. It also has information on how to work with local and state governments to support walking in your community.
We certainly don’t expect anyone to transform their neighbourhood single-handedly, so we’ve provided plenty of information about how to get other people working with you to encourage, promote and support local walking.
It’s a chance to do something that’s good for you and good for your local community – and you’ll find plenty of support from people right around Victoria who are doing similar things. You might want to start by having a look at some pages on the site, including:
