City of Moreland

Walking to School

Moreland City Council encourages students to walk, ride or scoot to school through our involvement in the Ride2School Active Travel Challenge and Walking School Bus programs.  Parents, schools and Council  work together to promote these forms of sustainable transport as a fun and healthy way to get around.

In the Active Travel Challenge schools throughout the City of Moreland compete to get the most students walking, scooting or riding to school.  The school who gets the most students using physically active ways to get to school wins a prize, as does the school with the biggest growth in active travel.   Prizes include school library books and active travel show bags. The Active Travel Challenge runs each month of the school year.  For more information and to join in visit http://www.ride2school.com.au

Schools who participate regularly get more than half of their students walking or riding to school on their Active Travel Days.

The Moreland Active Travel Challenge is part of the Bicycle Victoria Ride2School program and is partially funded by 'Go for your Life'.

In the Walking School Bus program parents, students, schools and Council work together to set up a supervised walking route to school.  Volunteer bus "drivers" walk a pre-arranged route and collect student "passengers" along the way.  Four primary schools in Moreland have active walking school bus routes, and each route has around 10 - 15 students who regularly walk to school with the walking school bus.  For information on how you can start or join an existing Walking School Bus, contact your local primary school or the Moreland Council at info@moreland.vic.gov.au

Pedometer Loan Scheme

Moreland Libraries have pedometers that you can borrow.  Pedometers measure how far you walk in a day and are a great motivation tool. Each pedometer comes with a 10,000  Steps information pack that includes a local walking map and information about walking groups in your area. Visit your local library to find out more.

Walking Groups

Moreland Community Health Service (www.mchs.org.au) and Heart Foundation Walking offer free walking groups in all suburbs in Moreland catering to a range of interests and abilities. To find a walking group in your area contact the Health Promotion Co-ordinator on 8319 7423.

Moreland Neighbourhood Houses  organise a range of community activities, including walking groups.  For more information and contact details for your local neighbourhood house visit http://www.moreland.vic.gov.au/community-services/community-centres-halls/neighbourhood-houses-moreland.html

Pedestrian Wayfinding Signs

Moreland Council is working with the Victorian Government to improve signs for pedestrians around the Coburg shops.   Council will roll out these state-of-the-art maps and direction signs at key locations in the Coburg Activity Centre in late 2009.

These signs

 - Use the universal language of pictorials rather than text to clearly show how to get important destinations

 - Can be updated as Coburg changes.

 - Show walking routes and links to public transport services

New seats along Sydney Road

Moreland City Council is working with the Victorian Government to upgrade the seats and bike parking hoops along Sydney Road.  This will greatly improve the urban amenity of the area and provides rest stops for shoppers and pedestrians.

Walking Maps

The Merri Creek Trail shared pathway map shows the entire walking route along Merri Creek from Clifton Hill through Fawkner. The map provides public transport, cultural and environmental information to assist the walker or cyclist to enjoy using the creek path. A Walking for Exercise in Fawkner map provides information on walking for exercise through several interesting walking routes of differing lengths. The Moreland TravelSmart map shows walking, cycling and public transport routes throughout Moreland.  For a copy of any of these maps contact Moreland Council via email info@moreland.vic.gov.au or phone 9240 1250.
