Photos & Stories

While I was out walking...

"While I was out walking..." is a series of photos that regularly feature on Victoria Walks' Facebook page.  The purpose of these photos is to celebrate the joys of walking and the local treasures that can be found in neighbourhoods everywhere, as well as to increase awareness about the things that make our streets better for walking (hover your mouse over each photo for a description).

Nonnaria - fence doubles as a seat for passersby Art brightens up an otherwise blank wall - Mirka Mora mural at Flinders Street A garden full of plants attracts butterflies
Truck blocking footpath - making it inaccessible for those with prams or in wheelchairs  Litter makes an area look unkempt and uninviting  Obstructions on footpath reduce walkability

For instance, beautiful gardens, edible nature strips and ample seating make an area more pleasant and enjoyable for walking, while obstacles on the footpath and litter reduces walkability.  By posting these photos on Facebook, walkers are invited to comment and interact with each other, sharing their ideas and thoughts about why walkability matters.  We hope that these interactions encourage walkers to become more attuned to walkability, and in doing so, help to make our neighbourhoods better for walking.

Walking Stories

Victoria Walks wants to build fun, friendlier and stronger neighbourhoods to get more people walking. Walking stories celebrate fantastic frontyards, happy feet and the joys of getting out and about. You can help inspire more people to walk by telling us your walking story.

We’ve collected some of our favourite local walking stories together for you to enjoy – and we always welcome more!  How about telling us:

  • What makes your neighbourhood tick
  • What you enjoy most about walking in your local area
  • Your favourite features, attractions and highlights
  • Your most dreaded eyesores, hazards and impediments.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve been delighted and amazed by the number of workplaces taking responsibility for employee health and wellbeing into their own hands – or perhaps, onto their own feet.

Plenty of people have sent us their workplace walking stories, but we’re always happy to receive more! We'd love to hear about:

  • What you enjoy most about walking to or at work
  • What you do to get off your chair and on your feet
  • Where you walk and what you see along the way
  • How your workplace supports walking.

Fitness, friendship, fun and a few laughs – all achieved in comfortable shoes. That’s what we love about walking groups.  Here are some great walking group stories by some wandering around Victorian neighbourhoods right now.

We’d love to hear about your group, too! Tell us:

  • What brings your group together – are you all pushing prams, walking dogs, walking through the bush, or just getting out of the house for an hour
  • What do you enjoy most about walking with others
  • Where you walk and what you see on the way.

Tell us your walking story

Don’t just feel that you have to stick to words! Why not take a camera with you the next time you’re out and about? How about getting your friends, neighbours or workmates involved? Send us your photos, short stories, or drawings… We’d love to put them on our website for the world to see!

Send your photos or stories to info[AT]victoriawalks.org.au; or Victoria Walks PO Box 154, Carlton South 3053.
