Case study - road narrowing, Port Phillip CC

 Before  After

Wide uninterrupted roads better serve the needs of vehicles rather than pedestrians. Wide roads can prove to be intimidating physical and psychological barriers for safe pedestrian crossing. In Albert Park, Victoria Ave at Moubray Street the wide road created an apron of asphalt that was confronting for pedestrians.

Port Phillip City Council treated the intersection with a road diet. They narrowed the entrance of the road which slowed vehicles to create a much shorter crossing distance for pedestrians. The footpath was raised and now has level access across the street which provides smooth, comfortable passage for foot traffic. Garden beds help to enhance and define the surrounding area. Walking is now given priority at this site.
